Kandegedera Wewa rehabilitated For the first time in the history of plantation companies,a local reservoir situated within the estate boundaries, was rehabilitated, bringing immense benefit not only to the estate population but also to the adjacent village communities. Kandegedera Wewa, situated in Southam Division of Demodara Estate, Hapugastenna Plantation Limited, in the Badulla region was the first of the small tanks to be rehabilitated with the support of the Plantation Company and implemented by Plantation Human Development Trust (PHDT) Badulla region. Earlier, the tank only had a 2.0 Ac. Ft. storage capacity, which allowed the villagers to utilize the scarce water resources only for the Maha season cultivation. The rehabilitation programme increased the storage capacity to 6.0 Ac.ft, resulting both Yala as well as Maha season cultivation. 94 families and around 200 farmers, in the Demodera Naulla Grama Sevaka division benefited. The plantation workers were also able to benefit from the reservoir for their vegetable cultivation. "We are very grateful to the PHDT for this initiative, where for the first time 'the estate connected with the village'. It brought immense benefit to us especially during the acute drought period in the region from May to September" said A. M. Gunatilaka, chairman of the Tank Committee, responsible for its maintenance. The project costing Rs 635,000/= was completed in 60 days in Nov-Dec last year.
