Lee and Raheem for world meet

by Leslie Fernando

The two outstanding swimmers Daniel Lee and Mayumi Raheem who swam at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games, Melbourne will represent Sri Lanka at the World Short Course Swimming Championships to be held in Shanghai, China.

Lee and Raheem will swim in their first events - 50 meters Butterfly stroke and 50 meters Breast stroke events respectively.

A former Royal and Sri Lanka waterpolo captain, Azim Azain went as the manager, while Mahes Karunaratne is the coach.

The meet is conducted by the Chinese Swimming Federation with the blessings of FINA. Sri Lanka were invited by FINA and all four air tickets, board and lodging is found by the organisers.

A spokesman for the Interim Committee said that normally FINA send invitations to SLASU each year for participation in international meets and is accepted as a practice. Non-participation with all the facilities provided means we will not be recognised by the world controlling body.
