Trinity all the way - age group and novices champs

S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Corr.

Seventeen records tumbled as Trinity College swept the board to become champions at both the Age Group and Novices Swimming Championship organised by the Central Province Aquatic Sports Association (CEPASA) and held at the University of Peradeniya swimming pool at Peradeniya.

Mahamaya Girls College won the Age Group championship for girls for the second year in running but Hillwood College performed well to win the novices championship for the first time.

The Lions roared loudly in the waters of the University Swimming Pool to win the Age Group Championship for the second successive year by amassing 1032 points and had a clear lead of 954 points over the second placed Kingswood College who had 78 points. In third place, was Colombo International School with 66 points. This will give some indication as to how the Lions roared in the waters.

In the championship for Novices Trinity College obtained 369 points and in second place was Kingswood College with 261 points while St. Thomas College, Matale finished third with 144 points. Thus the Lions completed a double.

The record breakers for Trinity was that promising swimmer Shehan de Silva and Heshan Unamboowe 3 each while Chethiya Wijeratne, Dilina Dissanayake and Chamika Wickremasinghe established one record each.

The awards for the best swimmers also went to the Trinitians: S. Auwardt (under 10), Shehan de Silva (under 12), L. O. Senaratne (under 14), Heshan Unamboowe (under 16) and Chethiya Wijeratne (over 16).

Trinitians dominated this meet to such an extent that in most events they secured the first three places.

Mahamaya Girls College won the Age Group championship by aggregating 855 points and they had a lead of 582 points over the first runner-up Hillwood College who registered a total of 273 points.

In third place was Girls High School with 72 points. Like Trinity, Mahamaya completely dominated this championship and in most events it was their swimmers who secured the first three places with some excellent performances coming from the Weeratunga sisters Hansani and Madhavi, Imani Abeykoon, Sunethra Wijeratne, Devmini Kularatne, Heshani Unamboowe, Mosha Malalasekera, Thushani Dayananda, Sanduni Barramenno and Tharanga Manapperuma.

For Hill, Chamari Kudabalage excelled while for Gateway College it was the performance of Minuwuani Samarakoon which kept them afloat.

In the championship for Novices Hillwood College sprang a surprise when they wrested the championship title from the defending champions Mahamaya College. Hillwood swimmers totalled 366 points against 279 by Mahamaya.

In third place was Colombo International School with 114 points.

Cuda Herath, Senior Brand Manager, Nestle Lanka Limited was the chief guest with Dr. Asoka Dangolla, Vice Chairman, Physical Education and Sports Advisory Council of the University of Peradeniya as the guest of honour.
