Trinitian Unamboowe best swimmer for 7th year

Heshan Unamboowe of Trinity College stole the limelight at the National Pentathlon Swimming Championships concluded on Sunday at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Pool when he set a record winning the best swimmer's award for the seventh consecutive year, thus beating the winnings (six - times) by former Sri Lanka swimmers Ghefari Dulapandan (S. Thomas College) and Upeksha Silva (Colombo International School). The Championship was conducted by the Interim Committee of SLASU.

Unamboowe, who has represented Sri Lanka at several international meets and also won two gold medals at the Asian Age Group Swimming Championship held in 2004 in Hong Kong, has won the best swimmer award under-10 (twice), under-12 (twice), under-14 (twice) and at this meet he became under-16 champion swimmer.

He also established a new record in the 100 metres butterfly stroke, 'clocking' 1.05.06 secs. Trinity and Mahamaya swimmers gave yet another pleasing performances to retain the boys and girls overall championship titles respectively. Trinity collected 70 points to emerge champions while St. Joseph's were runners-up with 52 points and Ananda third with 42 points in the boys.

Meanwhile Mahamaya took the championship honours with 57 points, Ladies and Musaeus declared joint second with 17 points each and Hillwood and Girls High School Kandy jointly third with 12 points among the girls.

Rajapaksa (AIS), Under-12: Ali Ispani (Royal), Under-14: Patum Edirisinghe (Ananda), Under-16: Heshan Unamboowe (Trinity), Under-19: Dilini Dissanayake (Trinity), Open - Chethiya Wijeratne (Trinity) Girls: Under-10: Sewansi Perera (Visakha), Under-12, Hiruni Kandanarachchi (Lyceum IS), Under-14: Madavi Weeratunga (Mahamaya), Under-16: Miniruwani Samarakoon (Gateway IS, Kandy), Under-19: Chaturi Abeykoon (Ladies).
