Ven. Nayake Thera receives Queen Elizabeth's recognition The Queen Elizabeth recently conferred the prestigious OBE (Order of the British Empire) award on the Most Venerable Dr. Medagama Vajiragnana Nayake Thera, Chief Sangha Nayake of Great Britain and Head of London Buddhist Vihara, in recognition of the Nayake Thera's outstanding achievements and services to promotion of harmony among different religious faiths in Britain.
Most Venerable Vajiragnana Nayake Thera, the first Sri Lankan to receive this laurel at Buckingham Palace has been actively advocating harmonious co-existence in Britain through the Inter-Religious Faith Union, founded in 1987, in which he was also a co-president for over a decade after he took over reins at London Buddhist Vihara (LBV). Laurels of highest reputation, including Tripitaka Visharada Dharmakirthi Sri Nivasa of Malwatte Chapter (1999), Agga Maha Saddhamma-jothikadaja by Myanmar Government (1999), Vishwa Keerthi Sri Sasana Shobana of Amarapura sector (1999) and award of the World Peace Prize (1997) and the Doctorate on Buddhist Studies from University of Chulalankara, Thailand to Venerable Vajiragnana Nayake Thera stand out as an endorsement of his services to the Buddhist cause.
