Talking Point - Geneva diary by Rajpal Abeynayake The LTTE never made it here to Geneva, though 24th was supposed to be the day the talks would begin. At the beginning of the countdown, it seemed that perhaps the LTTE hierarchy had some real problems to iron out. But then the LTTE was down to the dog ate my homework genre of excuses. People waiting in anticipation of their arrival here began to realize that, and made some psychological adjustment. The talks almost happened. That's if you were to go by the sporadic reports that came the way of people who were here, carrying out some preparatory tasks in anticipation of talks. With the LTTE you could never know. If they do turn up, they expect no hiccups, no irritants - they expect the VIP salaams. The international media here was waiting, but that's another story. For them, the Sri Lankan news cycle was dead before it began. Half the war is fought in the media spotlight and the Tigers seemed to have lost this round by default.
