Virtusa among world's 100 most innovative service providers

by Gamini Warushamana

Virtusa, a Sri Lankan technology company serving the global IT market is among the world's 100 most innovative service providers list published in 2006 by the Global Service Magazine. Virtusa reached this milestone after 10 years of its inception. The list recognises excellence among global service providers that demonstrate leadership, innovation and outstanding performance in Information Technology Outsourcing (ITO) and Business Process Outsourcing (BPO).

ICTA Chairman, Prof. V. K. Samaranayake told a press conference held in Colombo to mark the achievement of Virtusa that Sri Lankans are happy and proud of the landmark reached by Virtusa, a Sri Lankan initiative which has become a global company today. Virtusa has become one of the top service providers in the world, not by exploiting labour but by using brain power in Sri Lanka and India.

This is an example for others to move away from the short term target of earning money to providing a quality service. Virtusa started in the Third World and went to US and is now competing with US companies, he said.

Chief Marketing Officer of Virtusa Mark Herbert explained the business operations of the company. Virtusa is a global provider of software development and IT services to Fortune 1000 enterprises and leading enterprise software companies in the financial service, communication and high technology industries. Virtusa is a new generation global IT service company that delivers much more than cost savings.

The company is using its unique Productisation methodology, Virtusa conceives, transforms and optimises its clients information systems to improve their business agility and efficiency, he said.

Virtusa is a fast growing company headquartered in Massachusetts with offices and technology centres through the US, UK and Asia.

Managing Director, Asian Operations Keith Modder said that over the past five years, Virtusa has been growing at a 45% compounded annual growth rate.

There are 2,600 professionals in Virtusa's talent pool and of them about 1,000 are Sri Lankans, he said. The company plans to recruit people for project management, business analysis, software engineering and software quality assurance roles this year with a planned 50% growth over last year's hiring level.

Virtusa recently received a plot of land at Rajagiriya to build its IT campus which will employ around 3,000 IT graduates.
