Revenge of a lover, scorned

Sunday crime by Jayampathy Jayasinghe

The tragic killing of 15 year-old Malkanthi left the residents of Ahungalle in deep shock during the festive month of April

The day was April 4th, the venue Uragasmanhandiya, Ahungalle. A bright sunny day when a fifteen year old school girl, named Manori Malkanthi, was brutally stabbed to death by a twenty two year old disgruntled young man, while she was washing clothes at the well in her aunt's compound at Thelathupalatha in the Ahungalla area.

The motive for stabbing was due to her refusal to start an affair with a young man named Saman. He pressed her for an affair but could not win her over.

Malkanthi was scared to attend school that day for some unknown fear she had in her mind. She probably had a premonition of what was to happen that day. The pervasive sense of fear was overwhelming. She gave a flimsy excuse to her aunt and stayed at home. A typical village girl, she was unspoilt and shy in demeanour and had caught the eye of several young men in the village.

One such young man was twenty-two year old, Saman who worked as a labourer in a garage nearby. He showed an undue interest in her. One day, while she was returning from school he accosted her, but she totally ignored his overtures. She did not show the slightest inclination to befriend him.

This made him very angry and revengeful. She was a grade ten student at the North Magala Vidyalaya in Ahungalle. According to the villagers, the young man was a sort of bully among the women. How could a young girl be so arrogant and indifferent to him, he thought. He came from a broken home. His father had died of poisoning after being released from prison.

Malkanthi too was an unfortunate girl. Her parents had led a cat and dog life. They quarrelled over petty domestic issues and hurled insults at each other. According to Malkanthi's father his wife had had a clandestine affair with a man and left him almost five years ago.

She thereafter went over to a Middle Eastern country in search of greener pastures. Malkanthi's father had even blamed his wife for disposing their house to go to the Middle East. However he had provided for Malkanthi. He entrusted her to his sister-in-law to look after her.

She lived at Thelathupalatha in Ahungalle. On the day of the incident her aunt was in the bathroom when Malkanthi went over to the well in her compound to wash clothes. Whilst washing clothes the young man approached her and started an argument with her. He then pulled out a knife and had stabbed her incessantly all over her body. She then slumped into the ground and was bleeding profusely. Police said there were thirteen stab wounds on her body.

Meanwhile, a neighbour who had seen the suspect, Saman, running away after stabbing the girl tipped the police. Sub-Inspector Kulawanse later arrested the suspect, Saman at his residence. After recording his statement the police recovered the knife used in the stabbing hidden at a culvert. The suspect was later produced before courts and remanded till investigations are completed.

The post-mortem examination of the deceased Malkantni was conducted at the Karapitiya hospital in Galle.

The killing cast a pall in Ahungalle. The tragic killing of a 15 year old school girl came as a shock to the residents. They were so shocked and horrified to learn that an innocent school girl so young would be brutally killed in this manner. Further inquiries are being conducted by OIC Ahungalle, Inspector S. Prasane, with OIC Crimes Sub Inspector D. P. Wickramanayake under the supervision of SSP Ambalangoda, SSP Benjamin n
