Major parties call off May Day rallies

Main political parties, including the UPFA, UNP and the JVP yesterday decided to cancel tomorrow's May Day rallies due to security reasons. SLFP Convener and Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana said that considering the security situation in the country, the party leadership after consultation with President Mahinda Rajapaksa had decided to cancel its main May Day rally, scheduled in Galle tomorrow. He said the party had earlier planned to hold the May Day rally under the theme "Work for the country in unity".

UNP, Deputy General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said that owing to the prevailing situation, their party too decided to cancel the May Day rally which was scheduled in Kandy under the theme "Reduce the cost of living and fulfil promises". He said several other May Day rallies and processions planned to be held in Hatton and Maskeliya with the participation of estate trade unions too have been cancelled.

A senior spokesman for the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said their party too cancelled its proposed May Day rally at the Kotte Parliamentary esplanade under the theme "Striving to mobilise the masses of the country".

Several other May Day rallies and processions scheduled to be held tomorrow have been cancelled. They are the Ceylon Workers Congress rally at Hatton. Kandurata Janatha Peramuna at Hatton. United Socialist Party at Kosgashandiya. Government Servants Trade Union rally at Price Park.

The 1980- July Strikers Association rally at Gampaha. Estate Workers Congress rally at Badulla. National Fisheries Movement rally at Balapitiya. Ceylon Workers Society rally in Colombo (Opposite A.E. Gunasinghe statue). Catholic Brotherhood rally in Jubilee Hall, Colombo 2. Sri Lanka BOI Workers rally at Biyagama. All Island Government Clerical Service rally in Colombo.

Meanwhile a senior Police officer attached to the Police Head Quarters in Colombo told the `Sunday Observer' that almost all political parties were briefed about the current security situation in the country.
