Trinity and Mahamaya swimmers expected to dominate again

by Leslie Fernando

The Short Course National Swimming Championships conducted by the Interim Committee of Sri Lanka Aquatic Sports Union of Sri Lanka (SLASU) will be held for the first time in Kandy at Hillwood College swimming pool on May 5 and 6 commencing 9 a.m. each day.

The SLASU Interim Committee has already posted all details to affiliated clubs, schools and institutions regarding the meet. Entries will close today (April 30) with the Secretary, SLASU Secretariat, Reid Avenue, Colombo 7.

The usual events will be worked off for both men and women and overall champions will be selected in both sections - men and women.

Swimmers from Trinity and Mahamaya College who were outstanding in the boys and girls overall championships at the recently concluded National Pentathlon Swimming Championships at the Sugathadasa Stadium pool are expected to give repeat performances and win again.

Both Trinity and Mahamaya College swimmers have performed the best in the two swimming championships they participated in upto this month. The swimmers from both schools also have established several new meet records.

Last year, St. Joseph's College and Ladies College emerged boys and girls overall champions respectively.

An interesting fact is that two of Sri Lanka's outstanding swimmers who participated at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne and the World Short Course Swimming Championships in Beijing, Andrew Abeysinghe of Rainbow AC and Mayumi Raheem of Otter AC were selected the best men's and women's swimmers of the meet.

Both Abeysinghe and Raheem with international experience, are strongly favoured to establish several new Sri Lanka records at the two-day meet in Kandy.
