TALKING POINT

Sirens for all

Ranil Wickremesighe was yucking it up for the cameras after distributing sirens to "ensure protection of border villages.''

Then came the bombshell news that would have made a few of those sirens go off. Wickremesinghe had apparently equipped Mullathivu with some of those sirens -- fearing that the LTTE might not be adequately warned of military reprisal sorties perhaps?? What do they say? With friends like these.....

Crass cop

It was a typical traffic day on York Street Fort. A lady driving her car skillfully manoeuvred it and pulled it to a parking lot on the road. As she alighted from the car, a Police Inspector on duty standing by the roadside cast an obscene remark that jolted her.

She was shocked beyond words that a policeman could stoop to such low levels. It wasn't just a salted barb aimed at her, but something obscene that was said. She wasn't dressed scantily either, but even if she was, so what of it? Obscenity is certainly not a police officers business - the police are there to protect and not harass the public. Over to you the IGP.
