Vehicle classification shortly

Vehicles will be categorised and given specific alphabets shortly, to make it easy to trace vehicles involved in theft, irregular transfer or an accident, a spokesman for the Department of Registration of Motor Vehicles told the Sunday Observer.

He explained that "the existing system is a bit of a confusion because all vehicles such as cars, lorries, trucks, buses, vans, three-wheelers and motorcycles bear the same letters and numbers.

Numbers that begin with the letter (K) would be allotted to only cars. Letter (L) would be for heavy vehicles. In addition to this, letter (D) would be marked on the number plates of diesel vehicles and (P) for petrol vehicles.
