Gold for Jayalani Gomes

Jayalani Gomes of Sri Lanka won a gold medal in the female bantam weight category in the Taekwondo competition final at the 10th South Asian games at the St. Joseph's College Sports complex Darley Road yesterday.

Previously on Friday Samanthi Liyanagamage also of Sri Lanka won a gold medal at the female fly weight category. Sri Lanka also won a silver medal when P. M. Sandamalee came second in the female light weight category.

Pakistan strike gold

Pakistani's due Manzoor Zaman and Aamir Atlas Khan helped their country to secure a gold medal in the Men's Team Event Squash championship defeating India 2/0 at the Gymkhanas Club court yesterday. Both Zaman and Khan did not have much problem as the Pakistan No.1 South Paw Zaman defeated him opponent in straight sets 9/1, 9/1, 9/1.

Khan too, had an easy passage with a straight set win.

Results: Manzoor Zaman (Pakistan) beat Gauraw Nandrajog (India) 9/1, 9/1, 9/1.

Aamir Khan (Pakistan) beat Harindra Pal Singhe Sandu (India) 9/4, 9/2, 9/0.

Women's gold for India

India took the gold medal beating Sri Lanka 2/0 at the Women's Squash team event final played at the Gymkhana Club courts yesterday. Joshana Chinappa defeated Tehani Guruge in straight sets 9/5, 9/2, 9/2 but Nirasha Guruge after winning the second set 10/8 went down fighting to lose the remaining two sets 9/4, 9/4.

Team event final (women): Joshana Chinappa (India) beat Tehani Guruge 9/5 9/2, 9/2. Dipika Pallikal (India) beat Nirasha Guruge 9/4, 8/10, 9/4, 9/4. Vangala Anwesha Reddy (India) and Vidushi Gurunada (India) was not played.

India win gold beating Sri Lanka

India won the gold in the women's Kabaddi competition at the National Youth Centre, Maharagama yesterday.

Sri Lanka took the Silver medal, while Bangladesh won the bronze.

In the women's final India beat Sri Lanka by 39 points to 17. India had 26 Bonus and one luna, while Sri Lanka Bonus was 11 and one luna.

Bangladesh defeated Nepal by 9 points to take the third place Bangladesh collected 31 points to Nepal's 22 points.

Nepal win bronze

Nepal soccerites were successful in obtaining the Bronze Medal in football at Police park, Bambalapitiya yesterday. The Nepalese defeated the pre-match favourites India by 2 goals to nil in the match to decide the third place winner. Nepal led 2/0 at half time.

Taekwondo: St. Joseph's College sports complex - Men - Welter, Middle and Heavy Category from preliminary round to finals from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.
