Post harvest waste - drain on economy
Though the export revenue from vegetables and fruits is commendable
the country's post harvest waste which is around 40 percent is a
negative factor for the economy. Effective and efficient processing
mechanisms could avoid post harvest waste, Chairman, Organising
Committee, Ag Biz Trade Exhibition, Sarath Silva told the 'Pro Food Pro
Pack 2006' Ag Biz Trade Exhibition at the BMICH.
He said the private sector with its marketing strategies could
enhance value addition in all agricultural products and support the
livelihood of farmers. The private sector has a major role to play in
the development of the agricultural sector which is the backbone of the
economy.
President, Sri Lanka Food Processing Association, Nanda Kohana said
with participants from India, Japan and Malaysia' the event was an ideal
platform for Sri Lanka to play a major role in the Asian region and
project the strength of the food processing industry.
Minister of Agricultural Development Chamal Rajapaksa said the
National Agribusiness Council (NAC) plays a great role in supporting the
rural farmers to develop their livelihood.
An event of this nature will be a boost to the country's agricultural
sector which enables the farmers to sell their products at a better
price.
Minister Rajapaksa said the NAC with the support of the private
sector should strengthen the agricultural sector to be a vibrant
exporter.
Sri Lankan and international experts at the annual conference of the
NAC presented strategies to achieve pro-poor growth by linking farmers
and people in rural areas to the global value chain.
The NAC will continue its role as an apex body bringing parties
together in the agriculture sector to formulate strategies to achieve
pro-poor growth.
