Angry commuters go berserk

Angry train commuters went berserk and attacked the Mt. Lavinia Railway station and the station master last morning as the Colombo bound Ruhunu Kumari express train from Matara failed to stop at Mt. Lavinia. The station master who sustained injuries was rushed to the Kalubowila hospital.

Railway sources said the incident had taken place at the time when a passenger train from Panadura to Colombo had halted at Mt. Lavinia due to a technical defect.

“Although the Railway authorities had taken immediate action to stop the express train the engine driver had failed to obey the signal,” Railway Authority P.H. Silva told the 'Sunday Observer'.

He said thereafter, the passengers had pelted stones at the express train and caused damages.

Mt. Lavinia Police are conducting investigations.
