Swissotel Merchant Court Singapore...:
Hospitality at its best!
by Elmo Leonard
Swissotel, Merchant Court, Singapore, a Raffles International Hotel,
and an up market one, could be viewed as a by-product of that
city-nation's relentless economic transformation during 40 years of
independence. But, the word relentless if applied, to Singapore's
hospitality industry, would not do justice to the softness and tenacity
of the people in the trade, or the Swissotel personnel.
Characterising Singapore’s horizon is vegetation comprising trees
brought to the island from all over the world, during the past 40
years. Giving rise to the lush greenery is a hot wet climate, akin
to Sri Lanka’s wet zone. But, uncharacteristic of Sri Lanka’s
landscape, are speckled coconut palm, competing with the jungles of
trees for light and in the process bearing few nuts. But, Singapore
is never beaten, for the coconut palm is of ornamental value, here.

Swissotel, Merchant Court, Singapore,
illuminates the night. |
Or, perhaps to the Swissotel chain, in Bangkok, Beijing, Osaka,
Sydney, Moscow, Istanbul, Zurich and London. For, Swissotel staff say
that in all countries of its presence, this chain is intent on pleasing
the visitor. What is historic is personified. The cuisine is
intermingled with the local and what is found in the west. And, if you
make some suggestion, they will listen to you.
Further, Singapore is two-pronged in its approach to visitors; the
other being the island-city's projection as a business and conference
centre. But, this is another episode. Suffice it to say that while
Singapore competes with other destinations, as a business and conference
centre, she attempts to lure the visiting busy business traveller to
spend some days of leisure, according to our tour guide.
Swissotel Merchant Court, Singapore is precisely in the heart of the
city centre, by the banks of the historic Singapore River. The financial

Quay Festival Village and Boat Quay are also within close proximity. And
within Clark Qay MRT station at the doorsteps, getting to the airport,
major tourist attractions and shopping districts is easier than ever,
they say.
