A 187 run stand for the first wicket between left hander Dimuth
Karunaratne (137) and Ruwantha Fernandopulle (53) put St. Joseph’s in a
strong position when they replied with 238 for 3 in reply to Maris
Stella’s 77 on the first day of their school cricket match played at
Kadirana , Negombo yesterday.
Rajive Weearinghe 5 for 18 and Angelo mathew 4 for 22 restricted the
Negombo school for a paltry 77 in 39.4 overs in the first innings.

Cambrian sixes carnival
Cambrian Six-A-Side cricket tournament will be held at the Moratuwa
Stadium on October 28 and 29 from 9.00 a.m. Twenty one teams from all
leading clubs will participate in the tournament. This tournament is
organised by the ‘Cambrian Cricket Wing’ of Prince of Wales College,
Moratuwa.
Mr. Samanlal Fernando, Mayor of Moratuwa will be the Chief Guest. The
oldest living cricketer of the College, Mr. Lloyd Perera and the
renowned past captain of Prince of Wales, Mr. Hyesty Aponso will be
participated as guests-of-honour and the tournament is sponsored by East
West Marketing Ltd., Ceylon Cold Stores and Mind for Group (Pvt) Ltd.
Junior squash nationals
The 17th Junior National Squash Championships 2006 will be conducted
from October 28th to November 4 at the Gymkhana Club Squash Courts,
Maitland Crescent, Colombo 7.
Eranga Alwis of S. Thomas’ Mount Lavinia and Nirasha Guruge, formerly
of Holy Family Convent Colombo 4 are expected to defend their titles
with stiff opposition expected from Yaseer Issadeen, Chakkaranga
Rajapaksa and Niluk Soysa in the boys category. Tehani Guruge and
Damindi Udangawa are strong contenders in the girls event.
There will also be a Novices Junior Under 19 and a Juvenile Under 15
event for boys and girls in this year’s championship to encourage new
players to the game.
Boys and Girls, categories from ages 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 and the
Novices boys and girls under 19, and Juvenile Boys and Girls under 15
matches will also take place at the same venue.
Girls’ High School, Kandy Junior National Champs
Slick passes and intelligent play saw Girls High School, Kandy
carrying away major honours, winning the title at the Junior National
Netball Championships concluded last Sunday at the National Youth
Services Council, Maharagama courts.
The netballers from Kandy outplayed Sacred Heart Convent, Galle by 32
goals to 23 in the final.
The clash between the two teams picked on a lot of interest in the
four quarters.
However, Girls High School, Kandy players with good team work and
cohesive play enabled them to win the trophy.
Twenty eight teams participated in the championships and Sacred Heart
Convent created the biggest upset defeating the defending champions
Combined Mercantile team in the semi-finals by 24 goals to 22. Girls
High School, Kandy beat Western Province NA by 28 goals to 23 in the
other semi-final.
Combined Mercantile team won the third place match defeating Kalutara
Balika Vidyalaya 28-13. |
