The months� long rainy season advocated by the Buddha which confined Bhikkhus to a single abode, ends on Il Poya thereby permitting the Bhikkhus to embark on Dhammaduta missions again. The Katina chivara pooja or offering robes to Bhikkhus, one of the salient features of the Buddhists� calendar takes place on this day. Wide development spectrum envisaged

750 public proposals mooted in Budget 2007

The Government in its second budget has allocated the highest ever provision, over Rs.730 billion for the infrastructural development in the country. This is nearly 55 percent of the Government total expenditure and the quantum could be the largest allocation for infrastructural development in the history, said Deputy Finance Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya.

LTTE planning major offensive in East, says Army

The Security forces have charged that the LTTE was planning a major offensive in the East. Intelligence reports revealed an LTTE military build up in the Tiger held Vakarai from where the LTTE had directed repeated mortar and artillery fire at the Kajuwatta and Mankerny military detachments.

Train rams into Podi Menike

Transport Minister A. H. M. Fowzie said yesterday that he would take stern action against officials who were on duty at the time a Colombo bound trains from Polgahawela rammed into the "Podi Menike" express train which was halted due to a signal failure on Friday evening.
