Let this be a blessing

The Chief Guests

Kaushalya with her two children soon after the Passing Out parade

This is the country of great women in the calibre of Vihara Maha Devi and Rathanavali. Those who dig into the history can find heroines who prevailed during turbulent times of history. To emulate their courageous feats and to follow in their footpaths, the Sri Lankan Navy recruited 99 brave Navy women sailors who passed out from the Gemunu Navy Base at Welisara on November 29.

Parents and relatives of these women sailors who graced the passing out parade were seen with tears of joy. The sailors marched smartly while Lt.Commander Kaushalya Opatha, the Training officer commanded the parade and the chief guests Commodore J.C.Hettigama, Director of Electric and Engineering and Commodore T.A.D.R.Perera, Commanding Officer of Welisara Navy Base took the salute.

The Navy girls looked sunburnt and sustained bruises on their knees and elbows while undergoing rigorous training, but there weren't any signs of regret on their faces.

Instead, they portrayed pride, determination and courage to face the threat and challenge posed by the terrorists who had launched a separatist war which has been on for the past two and a half decades. Lt. Commander Opatha told the Sunday Observer that these new passed out Navy girls were sent to serve at Poonawa, Jaffna, Trinco and Galle.

Precious lives of servicemen belonging to all three Forces and the Police, patriotic and peace loving leaders and innocent civilians of all the races and communities (Sinhala, Tamil, Muslims and Burghurs) perished in the so called separatist war.

The mentality of the blood thirsty Tiger terrorists is to kill, maim and destroy innocent lives of peace loving citizens.

There have been occasions in history where, when the need arose, women had gone to the battlefront. So, it's not something new.

These girls have a good vision and are dedicated to fight for their motherland.
