Errant traders beware of CAA
by Chanuka Mannapperuma
The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) is fully geared to protect
consumers from errant traders, the CAA chairman said, urging the
consumers to play their role for a better consumer protection, by
keeping the authorities informed.
CAA Chairman Sarath Wijesinghe told the 'Sunday Observer' that the
CAA would act swiftly against errant traders to enable consumers to
access a competitive market.
"The consumer on his part has a responsibility to check for quality,
date of manufacture and prices before purchasing goods," said Wijesinghe.
He said unscrupulous traders would be brought to book and added that
the CAA would inquire into complaints regarding production, manufacture,
supply, storage, transportation or sale of any goods and the supply of
any services which does not conform to the standards. Traders will be
required to conform to the warranty or guarantee given by the
manufacturer or trader.
He said "if the consumer has a doubt about the product or the price,
the consumer should complain to the CAA."
Consumers should check for date of manufacture, guarantee card,
weight, quality and quantity.
He said it was mandatory for the manufacture to display the maximum
retail price, batch number and the expiry date. |
