Govi Dinaya to recognise farmers' services
Trincomalee District Farmers' Day (Govi Dinaya) was celebrated on a
grand scale recently. Although the Farmers' Day was scheduled to be held
on November 18, 2006, to coincide with the President's one year of
office, due to unfavourable weather it had to be postponed and was held
on December 3, with the participation of Secretaries and officials of
Government Departments, agriculture, agrarian, veterinary, health,
fishing and representatives of cultivation committees. Governor of North
East Province Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewikrama was the chief guest.
The Governor said that the objective of holding a Farmers' Day or
Govi - Dina was to recognise the farmer community and to improve the
inter community relationship among all ethnic groups, in the districts.
He said that he takes this opportunity to appreciate the hard work of
farmers, notwithstanding the threat to their lives and amidst all
difficulties, in the district.
The following requirements need to be addressed in the agricultural
sector. Scholarships to officers, modern equipments, developing dairy
farming, a novel cultivation system, a market for corn, introducing
grape and pineapple cultivation, introducing of minor crops to the
district and find a market coordinated agricultural activities, land for
farmers and educating farmers. |
