Tigers have stepped up violence in Vavuniya and planning an attack in the Wanni, the Media Centre for National Security said.

"During the last few days, tigers engaged in terrorist activities in Vavuniya, Omanthai, Murunkan, Kokkuthuduwai, Welioya, Parayamakulum. On January 21 terrorists abducted a police constable in Chettikulam and Sunduvendrapilaw and killed him. The same day, another Police Constable was killed and another injured in Kalmadu," the MCNS said in its website.

On January 22, LTTE cadres killed two youth near Vairawa Kovil, Vavuniya.

The same day, Security Forces recovered a haul of weapons hidden which Tigers were to use to attack the Security Forces. On January 23, the Tigers attacked a RDA vehicle killing a civilian and wounding four.Same day, Security Forces recovered a claymore mine and other arms.

On January 24, Security Forces retaliated to an LTTE attack in Kokkudivolu killing three LTTE cadres. Same day, troops shot dead an LTTE cadre and recovered a T 56 assault rifle.

The same day, two LTTE cadres who came to attack' the Security Forces were arrested and on interrogation, a haul of arms were recovered. On 26, two claymore mines targeting troops were recovered by the Security Forces and a disaster averted.

The LTTE cadres attacked STF on Security duty at yesterday in Murunkan. STF Commandos returned fire killing an LTTE cadre.

"These incidents clearly indicate the LTTE which has faced a severe setback in the East, is out to keep their cadres under their grip.

The LTTE has increased their activities in Vavuniya, Parayankulam, Kokkudowalai, Welioya and Mankerni. So a major LTTE attack against the Security Forces in Wanni can be anticipated," said the Media Centre for National Security.
