Vidura College determined to perform well
ATHLETICS: Vidura College, Nawala, Rajagiriya is a school that is
very interested in athletics and the boys and girls at the school are
learning fast the finer points in athletics.
Athletics at the school is grouped: Under 10 boys and girls, under 12
boys and girls, under 14 boys and girls, under 16 boys and girls and
under 18 boys and girls.
Those in training right now are concentrating at performing well at
the Nugegoda Educational Division Schools Meet to be held shortly. The
other meets that have caught the eye of the school: Sri Lanka Junior
National Championships and Junior Public Schools Athletic Meet for the
Sir John Tarbat Cup.
The athletes performed creditably at the above meets and also
participated at the World Athletic Day and won many places. The young
athletes are keen and eager and are bound to bring credit to the school.
Last year the captain Setavya Mudalige performed well at the Colombo
District Athletic Meet and won the 100 and 200 metre events and made it
three wins with victory in the long jump in the under 14 age group and
was adjudged the best athlete in the under 14 girls age group.
The school's inter-house athletic meet will be held on March 4 at the
CTB grounds in Narahenpita.
The Principal of the school Mr. D. G. Sumanasekera - the former
Nalanda Principal is keen to promote athletics at Vidura College and he
has the assistance of Ananda Athukorale - one of the national coaches
assisted by Miss Tharangani Ranasinghe - the Assistant Coach and
Teacher-in-Charge of athletics.
