Kingswood in superb fight-back - beat Royal 29-12

RUGBY: Kingswood staged a superb fight-back in the last 15 minutes to score a superb 29 points (2 goals, 3 tries) to 12 (1 goal, one try) win over Royal after trailing 10-12 at 'lemons' in their under 20 schools 'A' Division League Segment one match played at the Royal Sports Complex yester day.

Kingswood snatched the lead in the 20th minute of the second half when off a quick throw off a line out in the Royal '25' fly half C. P. Wijetunge collected the ball and sped over 20 metres to touch down by the left corner flag. Roshan Weeraratne missed the conversion and Kingswood led 15-12.

Five minutes later Royal won a scrum in their 25 but their scrum half Rafeek was tackled by his opposite number Roshan Weeraratne and Kingswood flanker C. P. Ratnage grabbed the ball and dashed through 15 metres to touch down by the left corner flag. Roshan Weeraratne made a splendid conversion to make it 22-12.

Just before the final whistle Kingswood were awarded a penalty in the Royal '40' and centre Thilina Manoj took a quick short tap and punted ahead chased it and collected the ball to score mid right. Roshan Weeraratne made no mistake with the conversion and Kingswood ran out worthy winners by 29 points to 12.

Kingswood opened scoring in the second minute when off a quick short tap in the Royal '25' centre Gayan Weeraratne sped over 20 metres to touch down mid left. Roshan Weeraratne missed the conversion.

Two minutes later Royal's winger Asif Hussain picked up a loose ball in the Kingswood '40' and dashed through to fall over for an unconverted try mid right to make it 5-all. Kingswood surged into the lead once again in the 17th minute when scrum half Roshan Weeraratne scampered through to touch down by the right corner flag. Roshan Weeraratne missed the conversion.

Two minutes later Royal snatched the lead once again when hooker Ayesh Rajapakse scored a push over try by the corner flag. Omar Hassan made a spectacular conversion and Royal led 12-10 at the breather.

Royal dominated play early in the second half and made an all out assault on the Kingswood goal line but some rib-bruising tackling by the lads from Kandy prevented the Royalists from crossing their goal line. Then came Kingswood's magnificent fight-back.
