More showers expected

The inter monsoonal rains will continue and over 70 millimetres of rainfall was experienced in some parts of the country during the past few days, a spokesman for the Meteorology Department told the Sunday Observer.

The North East monsoonal rains too will be activated within the next few days. Following heavy rains during the past few days the water levels of the Kalu Ganga, Gin Ganga, Kelani Ganga, Nilwala Ganga and Mahaweli Ganga have increased sharply, he said.

The National Building Research Institute (NBRI) has warned the public about the possibility of sudden earthslips in Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, Ratnapura, Kegalle, Matara and the Galle districts.

The floodgates of the Mahaweli reservoir and the main storage tanks will be opened at any moment and the irrigation authorities have warned people not to bathe in the main canals.
