Postal Act to be amended

Steps will be taken to amend the Postal Act, to mete out justice to
all employees, said, Secretary to the Ministry of Post and
Telecommunication, W. M. Piyasena.
After consultation with the representatives, it was agreed to appoint
a committee to look into all shortcomings and submit a report. He said,
the committee will consists of fifteen members including representatives
from the Trade Unions, the Public Service Commission and Ministry
officials.
He said the postal services are facing a crisis and there have been
problems at management level. Piyasena said, due to the widening gap
between income and expenditure there has been a setback in all
activities connected with the Department.
This situation has further deteriorated due to the inefficiency at
managerial level along with lack of job satisfaction.
There is confusion situation in granting promotions to positions such
as Deputy Post Master General, Superintendent, Assistant
Superintendents, Administrative Assistants, Chief Post Master General,
Uniformed staff and employees of all grades.
As a result the postal delivery system has suffered a setback due to
vacancies not being filled. He said, when the postal service
constitution was formulated most of these discrepancies would be
rectified.
