Two weeks ago I read in the Sunday Observer that a great
philanthropist had given a massive donation for this new project. And a
very capable senior consultant psychiatrist, Dr. Jayan Mendis has
completed this project for mothers and infants.
I am glad and sure all of us who have seen their suffering will be
ever grateful to Dr. Jayan Mendis and equally to his team of dedicated
medical staff. Congratulations and all good wishes Sir! Well done!

According to Section 185 of the Motor Traffic Act (as amended) where
a conductor is carried on an omnibus used on any highway that conductor
shall have the word 'conductor' legibly marked on some conspicuous part
of his clothing or wear in a conspicuous position, a metal badge bearing
the word 'conductor' in legible words.
This requirement is not being enforced by the relevant Passenger
Transport Authorities in respect of conductors of private buses nor it
is adhered to even by the Sri Lanka Transport Board. In view of the
above amendment the requirement to carry a licensed conductor in an
omnibus no longer exists.
However in the interest of the passengers it is pertinent that in the
case of conductors employed by private bus operators they are registered
by the respective Transport Authorities after having checked their age,
credentials and education level, if they are already not doing so and
thereafter all conductors registered are called upon to wear a badge
with the word 'conductor' with a number assigned by the relevant
Transport Authorities.
Thereby enforcing the provisions of Section 185 of the Motor Traffic
Act (as amended). This would also enable errant conductors who do not
issue tickets after collecting fares and those who involve in various
acts of misconduct to be easily identified for suitable action.
I trust my suggestion will receive due consideration of the Minister
of Transport and the authorities concerned.
