ICASL theme will have major impact on all sectors - British HC

Sri Lanka and Britain share the same aspiration of bringing about peace and harmony which could be achieved only by respecting other ethnic groups and not alienating them, said British High Commissioner, Dominick Chilcott.

He was addressing the 28th National Conference of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (ICASL) on Thursday.

The High Commissioner said the theme of this year's conference 'Energise to create a tomorrow' will have a major impact on all sectors that supports the country's economy and achieving lasting peace in the land.

He said the two countries which have much in common share and support each other in achieving peace and prosperity.

The multi ethnic and the socio political background of Britain is similar to Sri Lanka and the efforts to bring about reconciliation must be the focus of all citizens.

"Britain today is making every endeavour to understand the aspirations of the British Islamic community and support them but the country is not prepared to tolerate terrorism as a solution to their problems", Chilcott said.

There is much that people can learn from the team spirit shown by the players of both cricket teams. The recent test match in Kandy amply demonstrates the team spirit of Sri Lankan cricketers.

Cricket has been a strong uniting force today. Both cricket teams comprising members of various ethnic groups is what people should admire and learn from.

The Sri Lankan and British accounting bodies forge close relations and have gained immensely through mutual support. Sri Lanka's accounting standards are based on the British standards.

President, ICASL, Yohan Perera said communication and commercial skills play a pivotal role in the accounting sector.
