Navy celebrates 57th anniversary
The Sri Lanka Navy will celebrate its 57th anniversary today. The
main Buddhist ceremony will be held at the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy,
under the patronage of Vice Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda. The Navy
ceremony will be primarily based on religious activities. Various
religious services will be held throughout the day today in churches,
kovils and mosques to invoke blessings on the injured and disabled in
war.

GCE O/L exam begins tomorrow
The GCE (O/L) examination will begin tomorrow at 3,990 centres
including the North East. 528,887 candidates will sit the examination
tomorrow. 399,169 are school candidates and 129,718 are private
candidates. Paper marking of the GCE (O/L) examination is scheduled to
begin on December 20 at 105 centres.

Lanka to host 15th SAARC Summit
The SAARC Council of Ministers agreed during their 29th session of
the 14th Summit held in New Delhi to hold the 15th SAARC Summit 2008 in
Sri Lanka. Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama stressed the importance
of this event for Sri Lanka as it coincides with Sri Lanka's 60th
Independence anniversary in 2008. The 16th Summit will be hosted by the
Maldives in 2009.

Fourth phase of Upper Kotmale project
The fourth phase of the Upper Kotmale hydro power project is to be
initiated shortly. The first two phases have been already completed
while the third phase is under way. Steps have been taken to provide 495
houses to those who will be displaced due to the mega project.

CID summons Ravi
UNP Member of Parliament Ravi Karunanayake has been summoned by the
Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with a Money
Laundering offence where three million dollars in local currency had
been deposited in a private bank. The CID commenced investigations
following a complaint by the Financial Investigation Unit of the Central
Bank.

Chandrasekaran for GOPIO parley
Minister of Community Development and Social Inequity Eradication, P.
Chandrasekaran will participate in the ninth conference of Global
Organisation People of Indian Origin (GOPIO). The conference will be
held in Malaysia. Representatives of Indian origin Tamils will
participate. The conference will be held from December 14-16 in Kuala
Lumpur.
