75% of Trinco's power needs met

Seventy five per cent of the Trincomalee District's electricity requirement has been supplied and the balance will be provided in the near future, Trincomalee Government Agent Major General Ranjith Silva said.

There was no electricity in the District except in a few places when the development activities were commenced after establishing the government administration in the Eastern province after flushing out terrorists from the area.

The Government Agent said that a series of development projects which commenced a few months ago are now nearing completion, including a three-storeyed new vegetable market and the new bus stand in the city, new Kachcheri building at Anandakulama, marketing centre in the Anandapura junction. The Nation Building Ministry has funded the three-storeyed vegetable market building project and the marketing centre at Anandapura junction was funded by USAID.

According to the GA, the construction work of the coal power station at Sampoor has commenced. A 1600 acre BOI industrial zone is being planned and leading industrial and trading organisations will set up their factories in Trincomalee BOI zone.

The GA said that the agricultural sector too has undergone remarkable development in the District.

The Director planning C. Sunderalingem said that 68 projects out of 90 projects planned for 2007 have been completed.

Tank repairs, water supply schemes, renovation of roads, establishing computer centres and educational activities are a few of those completed projects which come under the "Gama Neguma" scheme, he said.
