P. P. Devaraj-Chairman of Global Level Indian Organisation
P. P. Devaraj, former State Minister for Hindu Religious Affairs
under the government of President Premadasa was elected chairman of the
Global Organisation Indian Origin at the ninth conference of the
organisation held recently in Kualalampur.
Devaraj is one of the leading intellectuals cum politician emerged
from the Indian origin Sri Lankan Tamil Community and a strong advocate
of the power sharing arrangements of non-territorial minorities such as
upcountry Tamils and Muslims in Sri Lanka.
The Expert committee of the All Party Conference incorporated the
principal of Zonal council for promoting the welfare of the upcountry
Tamils in its proposals. This idea of Zonal council was canvassed by P.
P. Devaraj when he made representation to the expert committee.
Devaraj has served as an advisor to Sowmiyamoorthy Thondaman on
political matters and he led the Lahour Foundation of the Ceylon Workers
Congress.
He made a pioneering effort to establish Hindu religious Sunday
schools which have spread throughout Sri Lanka during the past two
decades.
Presently, he functions as a member of think tank of the Ministry of
Community Development and Social Inequity Eradication. He is also the
founder of the Centre for Social Transformation which is involved in
research studies and documentaries on proposals for the resolution of
the national question and Charter of Rights. |
