Police should maintain a close rapport with grama niladaris and the
residents to maintain peace, law and order, DIG Kurunegala Pujitha
Jayasundera said at Alawwa recently. DIG Jayasundera was speaking at a
ceremony held at Alawwa Town Hall to distribute identity cards among
Civil Security Committee members in the Alawwa police area recently.
Officers-in-charge of police stations should have a comprehensive
knowledge of every component in the environment under the purview of
their duty station.
Jayasundera said that unfortunately however, many police officers are
virtually looking down upon grama niladaris - the valuable resource in
gaining knowledge of the area. He also said that in many cases grama
niladaris are not welcomed at police station when they go to assist the
police, whenever necessary.
These obstacles will be overcome when they join the proposed civil
security committee members. He said that time has come to think
differently and change this attitude towards the government officials
who are at the field level. He also said "Today's criminals have
understood loopholes in the police department, therefore we should join
hands with these civil security committees and work more closely with
people to overcome the obstacles," Jayasundera, said.
