NOC considers around 10 competitors for Beijing Olympics

OLYMPIC GAMES: The National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Sri
Lanka are considering up to 10 competitors to represent the country at
the 29th Olympic Games to be staged in Beijing, China in August.
A spokesman for the local NOC told the 'Sunday Observer' that four
competitors have already qualified. They are Susanthika Jayasinghe (who
is now undergoing training in the USA) and Nadika Lakmali (Athletics),
boxer Anurudha Ratnayake and Pistol Shooter K. M. Senanayake.
Badminton's three Karunaratne brothers (Niluka, Dinuka and Diluka)
are also among these who are trying to "get the nod" from the NOC. The
former is not only the reigning national champion, but also a world
ranked player in singles, while in two younger brothers are also world
ranked in doubles.
Rohan Sirisena and Ishara Madurangi's participation in Beijing is
being canvassed by the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka) (TTASL),
while the Weight Lifting Association (SLWLA) has nominated Chinthaka
Vithanage who won a medal at the Commonwealth Games, while the Archery
Association has recommended Manoj Kodikara and Duduli Silva.
Mayumi Raheem and Andrew Abeysinghe are the two best swimmers who are
ear-marked to compete in Beijing. However, Abeysinghe, had not shown
interest to represent the country at the Asian and World Championship
meets. He is in the USA.
"The final decision in the selection of Sri Lanka's contingent is
with the NOC with the approval of the Ministry of Sports," said the
spokesman for the NOC. |
