Data security on online transactions a challenge

Vishal Dhupar

While on-line transactions are growing year-on-year globally the challenge to protect data is becoming enormous, said Managing Director, India and SAARC, Symantec Corporation, Vishal Dhupar.

He was addressing the media on how Symantec can help entrepreneurs in Sri Lanka to secure and manage data.

“Growth in on-line transaction in Asia has been on par with the world and is expected to triple this year. Today the mode of doing business is changing rapidly and the need to ensure security of information is vital”, Dhupar said.

With the shift from the industrial to digital age the consumer’s needs and lifestyles have changed. In a rapidly changing global business environment confidentiality of data for enterprises is a priority. Organisations are increasing their budgetary allocation on data security.

Unlike in the past today information is accessed real-time from any location. Today digital crimes have become sophisticated and the rate is growing at an alarming proportion. Organisations are grappling to mitigate risks and prevent huge losses.

He said the attack velocity has increased 10 to 12 times and today banks are facing phising attacks than ever before. From July to December last year attacks increased than the previous years. The threat landscape is changing from hackers to underworld robbers.

Home computer users are often the weakest link in the chain and are the most targeted. Threats to confidential information will increase. Phisers are employing increasingly sophisticated methods which cannot be easily detected.

“Cutting down costs, agility in a high performing business environment, ensuring information is protected and viable when needed and making IT a business partner and not a cost centre are some of the key benefits of data security”, Dhupar said.

Symantec, a global leader in providing security, storage and systems management solutions helps business and consumers secure and manage their information. Headquartered in Cupertino, Califonia, Symantec has operations in over 40 countries. LF
