Interim relief for Slave Island squatters

All families living in unauthorised houses at Slave Island will be granted Rs. 8,000 each every month to lease houses wherever they prefer until the multi-storeyed complex at Dematagoda is completed, a spokesman for the Urban Development Authority (UDA) said yesterday.

Housing Project, Co-ordinator Ajith Kumara told the Sunday Observer that the Rs. 8,000 will be paid only for those who have not yet shifted to transit houses at Mattakkuliya provided by the state.

He said over fifty families from Glennie Passage, Station Passage, and Pahala Watta in Kompannaweediya have already shifted to transit houses following the demolition of their unauthorised houses by the UDA last week.
