Security forces advance towards Mullaitivu, Mannar

Security forces advancing in the Forward Defence Lines of the Wanni front are closing in towards Thunukkai and Mallavi in the Mullaitivu district and with another thrust towards Vellankulam in Mannar, military sources said.

Troops of the 57 Division under the command of Major General Jagath Dias are heading towards the Thunukkai and Mallavi areas.

Towards the Western coastal line, troops of the 58 Division led by Brigadier Shavindra Silva, are marching forward towards Vellankulam, approximately 10 kms from Iluppaikadawal.

Most areas in the vicinity of the Vavunikulam tank are under the total control of the security forces.

In the Mannar district, three kilometres from Vellankulam is the border of the Kilinochchi district.

“We have observed an eight kilometres long earth bund six kilometres south of Vellankulam. The troops have targeted to cause maximum cadre loss to the LTTE,” Brig. Shavindra Silva said.

According to ground information, it is possible that the LTTE might use its maximum effort to hold on to these territories due to its strategic importance.

By Friday troops of the 57 Division recovered 33 LTTE dead bodies. A 120mm artillery gun and a 81mm mortar gun were recovered along with a haul of weapons and ammunition in the aftermath of the battle to rescue the Vavunikulam tank.
