The entire Jaffna peninsula will be provided electricity without any
interruption by mid September, according to officials of the Ceylon
Electricity Board (CEB), Jaffna.
The power supply in the peninsula is stopped in rotation for one hour
during peak hours between 6 pm 10 pm daily due to the work being carried
out, according to the Deputy General Manager of the CEB Jaffna, M.
Muthuratnanthan. A private company called Northern Power is currently
engaged in installing the turbines and other vital machinery in various
parts in the peninsula as there was no electricity for the past several
years.
The supply of electricity to the islet areas is nearing completion in
the peninsula and the entire Jaffna peninsula region will receive an
uninterrupted supply of electricity in one month Muthuratnanthan said.
At present several small industries have started operations.
However, with the restoration of electricity in the region several
mega projects are also expected to be launched under plans to be worked
out by the Northern Development Task Force, which was set up three
months ago by President Mahinda Rajapaksa under the Chairmanship of
Minister of Social Services Douglas Devananda, the sources said. |
