Siyane Tharu and Golden Birds President’s Gold Cup champions

VOLLEYBALL: The spikers from Siyane Tharu SC, Gampaha and Golden Birds SC emerged men’s and women’s champions respectively at the Dialog GSM President Gold Cup Volleyball Championships conducted by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation played at the National Youth Services Council Indoor Stadium at Maharagama yesterday.

Siyane Tharu SC won the men’s title 3-1. The final was interesting and exciting Gampaha side pulled off the two sets 25-21, 25-21, but Siriduwa SC, Seeduwa put a gallant fight back to win the third set 25-20. Siyane Tharu SC with a better control game won the fourth set and the match with 25-22. They took 98 minutes to complete the game. The Gampaha side had able spikers in Maurice Chaminda Perera, Dimuthu Upasantha, Chanaka Jayasuriya and Chandima Dissanayake. Its main asset was its strong defence and to spike above the blocks.

The women’s final was a one sided affair with Radawana Golden Birds SC outplaying Siyane Tharu SC, Gampaha in straight sets 3-0 showing tremendous combined team work. Radawana Golden Birds SC spikers proved their class in all departments of the game. They put up a strong block and did the boosting job with fine strike power to win all three sets with ease. They led in all the sets. It was all over in exactly 60 minutes. The champions won the first set 25-16 in 20 minutes, the second 25-14 and third 25-12 in 20 minutes each.

Siyane Tharu SC team comprised Chandima Dissanayake, Chanaka Jayasuriya, Chamara Mihiran, Sameera Prageen Dissanayake, Maurice Chaminda Perera, Dimutu Upasantha, K.S. Sumedha, K. Ranasinghe, S. Gaya Sri, Udaya Rukmal, S.N. Perera, Manoj Madhusanka.

The champion women team, Radawana Golden Birds SC was represented by Krishanthi Jayawardena, Deepika Abeysinghe, Nadeeka Athukorale, Lalani Gunawardena, D. Illangakoon, Hasanthi Jayamal, Inoka Sajeevani, Kaushalya Harshani, Hasini Nissansala.

The champions were presented the Presidents Gold Cup and cash awards and the runner-up received trophies and cash prizes.
