Lanka’s maternal healthcare commended

Sri Lanka’s maternal healthcare is better compared to those of other developing countries due to the free healthcare service, said Director Family Health Bureau, Dr. Chitramalee De Silva. She said that Sri Lankan women understand the importance of healthcare, during pregnancy. United Nations report titled ‘Progress for Children - a report card on Maternal Mortality’ indicates that 90 per cent of the births are attended to by professional healthcare personnel in Sri Lanka.

“We have a professional healthcare staff and we have strengthened our health services in the estate sector, in the North and the East where we are currently in the process of recruiting healthcare workers” said Dr.De Silva.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Population Fund has also been instrumental in providing funds to train healthcare personnel in maternal clinics where women can obtain the best advice during pregnancy.
