e-wis introduces Master Card technology to EPF

e-wis, a leading ICT solution company in Sri Lanka has introduced Master Card technology to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), the biggest fund in Sri Lanka.

Gayan Samaraweera

Government institutions are gradually transforming with the ICT to enhance efficiency.

The government has pumped money on e-governance and e-Sri Lanka programs to introduce ICT to government institutions. This project comes under the e-governance program.

The EPF automation project launched parallel to the 50th anniversary of the fund is gathering information of employees.

The Solution Specialist of e-wis, Gayan Samaraweera said that the technology introduced in this project is far superior.

This is the first time that the Master Card technology has been introduced for identification purpose in Sri Lanka - one of the biggest government sector projects. The project launched early this month would take six to eight months to complete the data base, Samaraweera said.

All the employees’ data including fingerprints and a photograph are stored in the central database.

NEC software, the world’s best fingerprint matching solution and Cross Match finger print scanner are used in the identification purpose under this project.

NEC, the world’s best solution has 99.9% accuracy while the German-made scanner provides 100% accuracy in scanning.

Data gathering is a difficult task because the implementing team has to visit each and every employee. At present 80 teams led by Labour Department officials have been deployed for data gathering.

The EPF Fund with over 1.2 million private sector employees is managed by the Department of Labour. At present, most of the functions of the Fund are done manually leaving room for frauds and inefficiency.

Samaraweera said under the new system, the EPF number of an employee will be his National Identity card (NIC) number.

After retirement, the employee can call over at the Department of Labour and provide his identity card number and get his money released.

In this process he may not have to produce papers and his identity will be verified by scanning his fingerprints.

This automation process also enables the Department to decentralise its functions to the districts.

The Department will also install kiosk machines to provide fund information to employees.

The employees can check their fund balance by entering their EPF number with proof of their identity by finger prints. This will help employees to check whether their employers had made the EPF contribution.

Under the new system every person gets an EPF number - his or her NIC number. This number will not be changed even if the employees change their jobs. Under the present system, the employee’s EPF number changes from employer to employer and therefore employees have several EPF accounts if they have changed jobs.

e-wis has a good track record and we have been successful in implementing mega projects in large government and private sector organisations in Sri Lanka, Samaraweera said.

We have been in the ICT industry over the past 22 years and today e-wis can provide any software and hardware solution.

We have implemented our solutions in SriLankan Airlines and at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

For the First time in Sri Lanka we hosted the examination results of the Examinations Department when the Department began to provide results online. We have also undertaken a computerisation project of the Pensions Department, Samaraweera said.

Toroid signs Microsoft Enterprise Agreement

Toroid International (Pvt) Limited has entered into an Enterprise Agreement with Microsoft Sri Lanka, which enables the transformer manufacturing multinational to deploy the latest in Microsoft technologies within the organisation.

The agreement brings along with it Microsoft expertise that will help Toroid to optimise its IT infrastructure ensuring faster return on investments and empowering it with better risk management capabilities.

Before taking the step to invite Microsoft to partner its growth plans into the future, the management at Toroid realised there was a need to consolidate the company’s IT systems and processes to enhance its performance. Thus, this strategic partnership provides Toroid access to the latest Microsoft software, thus ensuring the company stays a step ahead in the global competitive arena.

Toroid International becomes the second organisation in the Katunayake EPZ (Export Processing Zone) to sign an Enterprise Agreement directly with Microsoft Sri Lanka.

The EPZ counts some of the best known global brands’ manufacturing facilities from all spheres of industry. The very fact that an EPZ company should opt for the Microsoft Enterprise Agreement above all others reflects Microsoft’s adaptability and ability to grow with exponential business demands that Toroid is forecasting.

The agreement is specifically targeted at large scale business entities, companies having 250 or more desktops, a sphere in which Microsoft has earned the reputation for offering the best value.

Microsoft’s most preferred offering to its corporate customers, the Enterprise Agreement, simplifies licence administration by merely requiring a single transaction to acquire licences across the entire enterprise and thus helps ensure compliancy.

Apart from the technical aspects of the agreement, the highly trained and professional IT team at Microsoft is always on hand to address any troubleshooting that may arise and assist managers at Toroid to extract the best value from the licensed products.

Specifically where Toroid was concerned, the Microsoft team identified certain areas that would greatly benefit the EPZ-based company. By adopting the Microsoft Enterprise Agreement, the suite of Microsoft products on offer will benefit the areas of communication, workflows, messaging and collaboration programs and document management solutions at Toroid.
