Vain effort by Shalika as NCC take first innings lead

A defiant century by Shalika Karunanayake (111) was insufficient to prevent NCC of gaining first innings points as SSC were bowled out for 290 in reply to NCC's 420 on the second day of their division one Under 23 Cricket final at the SSC grounds yesterday.

Karunanayake the former Sri Lanka Schools player took the challenge single handedly after the dismissal of skipper Hans Fernando for 78 and batted with caution and aggression stroking 13 fours and 5 sixes facing 145 deliveries with a 188 minute stay at the wicket when wickets fell around him.

Karunanayake arrived at the crease with score reading 93 for 4 and took the score upto 271 before he was caught by Goonetileka off spinner Eranda Gangoda. Karunanayake and Chatupama Gunasinghe were engaged in a good 48 run stand for the ninth wicket in a desperate effort in bridging the gap.

NCC has a substantial of 130 runs when SSC were dismissed for 290 in the penultimate ball of the day.
