Preparing communities to face natural disasters

Natural disasters have been increasing around the world over the past years. This year was no different and we witnessed earthquakes, hurricanes, severe floods and such other disasters in many areas of the world. More are expected over the coming months and even Sri Lanka has not been spared by the forecasters.

Promoting a global culture of natural disaster reduction including the prevention and mitigation (lessening the impact) of disasters and preparing communities to face such events were the objectives of the International Day for Natural Disaster Reduction, which was observed on the second Wednesday of October (8th). The Day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 1989.
