Vivace - a delightful presentation
by Dudley JANSZ
The renovated Hall of Good Shepherd Convent, Kotahena reverberated
last Sunday to Vivace, a choral concert presented by the school's senior
choir.
The program consisted of classical, folk, rock, pop and contemporary
compositions in English, Sinhala, Tamil, Latin, German and Spanish.
From the outset it was evident that a great deal of effort and
practice had gone into the two-hour program to enthral the audience. The
teenage girls sporting trendy costumes and colourful kits were the
cynosure of all eyes on a tranquil Sunday evening.
Vivace, as the name suggests gathered momentum after the interval and
the appreciative audience went into raptures to the toe-tapping tunes
which blended with the feminine voices in perfect harmony.
Kimadanawe tugged at the musical heartstrings of many apart from Any
dream will do and the rendition of 'In the still of the Night' presented
by the past pupils with Rehana Alexander in the vocal spotlight. As far
as professionalism is concerned this stood out from the rest. Elvis
Presley's smash hit 'Can't help falling in love with you' was done
adroitly with grace and charm. The girls' gyrations sent youngsters into
a frenzy. The Abba medley including Thank you for the music and the
pulsating 'La Bamba' enraptured the exuberant audience.
The lilting melodies and the peace song was a fitting finale to
Vivace as it climaxed the musical extravaganza, a concert revived after
almost two decades.
A beautiful bouquet was presented to the Choral Director, Francis de
Almeida as a token of appreciation for his untiring efforts and a job
well done!
