Plans for new reservoir
 |
Gurugal-Oya |
Plans are under way to create the Gurugal-Oya reservoir which would
better utilise the water of the Murapola-Ela irrigation scheme. The
reservoir, which is estimated to be built at a cost of Rs. 400 million,
borders the Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.
The irrigation scheme is expected to feed about 2,000 acres in the
Dealthota area. At present, it feeds only about 1,300 acres of crop
fields, but after the Gurugal-Oya reservoir building project is
completed, 700 more acres of land are expected to be fed.
It would also help farmers to be involved in agricultural work in
both 'Yala' and 'Maha' crop cultivation seasons, depending on its water.
A mini hydro-power plant is also expected at the Gurugal-Oya reservoir.
A bridge between Kandy and Nuwara Eliya would also be a feature of
the Gurugal-Oya reservoir construction project.
The project will be co-ordinated by the Kundasale irrigation office. |
