Technological Institute for Northern students
An advanced Technological Institute was open in Jaffna for the
benefit of the students in Northern province who are eager to continue
their higher studies in the disciplines of engineering, accountancy and
Information Technology. This is a proposal made by Prof. Wiswa Warnapala,
Minister of Higher Education to the government.
Rs. 190 million from the Kuwait Tsunami Fund was allocated to
construct the Institute, a press release from the Ministry said.
The Institute built on a two acre land has 12 lecture rooms, 10 class
rooms and three IT laboratories. Fifty computers have been already
installed. Around 1,500 students could attend classes. Sixteen lecturers
have been appointed to conduct classes and this number will be increased
in keeping with the rising demand. The medium of instruction will be
English and Tamil.It is reported that although the students in Jaffna
undergo various difficulties their thirst for higher education is being
stimulated by innovative steps taken by the government. K. Kathiramalai,
a qualified educationist has been appointed as the Director of the
Jaffna Institute. |
