The Accredited Training Providers' (Private Sector) Association was set up recently under the patronage of Minister of Vocational and Technical Training Piyasena Gamage at the BMICH with a membership of private sector vocational training providers who are eligible to conduct NVQ courses, in Sri Lanka.

The National Vocational Qualifications System consists of seven distinct levels. NVQ levels 1 to 4 are for craftsmen and issued with National certificates NVQ level 5 is for Diploma level, whereas level 6 for Higher Diploma and the level 7 is for degree equivalent qualification.

The National Vocational Qualifications are offered through the Competency Based Training (CBT) and assessments in accredited training courses or through the Recognition of Prior Learning and Assessments for those who have already acquired competencies through industry practice.

Therefore, it is vital that all training providers, public and private, obtain course accreditation from the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission. A course of training is provided by public sector networks and the private sector institutions on an islandwide basis for NVQ Levels 1 to 4.

There are competency standards covering over 70 occupations for this purpose.

Nine Leading Technical Colleges are being upgraded to Colleges of Technology to offer NVQ Level 5 and 6 diploma courses.

Two institutions have already begun courses. Degree qualifications will be offered by the University of Vocational Technology (Univotec) which will be set up at Ratmalana shortly.

The Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC) is the apex body in the TVET sector is the central monitoring body in the implementation of NVQ in Sri Lanka.

One of the vital activities of the TVEC is to assure maintenance of stipulated quality standard in NVQ framework among vocational training providers in the public and private sectors.
