The capital market which accounts for around 25 per cent of the
country's GDP is growing at a steady pace, said Director General
Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Channa De Silva.
He was addressing a ceremony held recently to mark the 21st
anniversary of SEC.
"SEC was set up to ensure order and control in the securities market.
The capital market which makes a major contribution to the economy
should be developed", De Silva said.
Inflation is affecting all sectors of the economy. Curbing inflation
is not an easy task in a country that spends enormously on a war. A
balance between development and defence is essential.
He said the participation of women in the securities market is below
3 per cent. In other sectors women play a major role in the development
of the organisation.
The participation of women in the capital market has to be increased.
Chairman, SEC, Dr. Gamini Wickremesinghe said steps will be taken to
enhance knowledge on the capital market through programs launched in
schools and universities. "SEC will introduce a quiz program for
students in the accounting profession and other relevant fields to widen
their knowledge", he said.
A cash prize of Rs. 20,000, Rs. 30,000, Rs. 50,000 and certificates
were presented to the three students selected from the all-Island Quiz
competition held by the SEC.
The book on 'Investing' authored by Y.W. Gunawardena was launched on
the same day. |
