Kandy District sports awards today

The awards ceremony of the Kandy District Sports Development Foundation (KDSDF) will be held today (Sunday) at Dharmaraja College Auditorium starting at 3 p.m.

The chief guest will be Arjuna Ranatunga, the Chairman of Sri Lanka Cricket Interim Committee and MP. The President of Kandy District Sports Development Foundation General Anuruddha Ratwatte will also be present.

Medals and certificates will be awarded to over 700 winners of various sports competitions like... Cricket, Football, Rugby Football, Tennis, Athletics, Swimming, Boxing, Judo, Volleyball and Netball.

There will be special awards for veteran sportsmen of years gone by.

To General Ratwatte goes the credit of organising this show and he is also responsible for bring up the Kandy Bogambara Stadium upto international standard when he was Minister of Power and Energy and the Deputy Minister of Defence in 1996.

He was also responsible in inaugurating the Sports Fund with assistance received from friends and well-wishers.

It was from funds collected that 24 playgrounds were improved and supplied with sports equipment.

New playgrounds like Hasalaka, Uda Dumbara, Patha Dumbara and Meda Dumbara youth also benefitted from them.
