The Road Development Authority (RDA) on Thursday allocated Rs. 300
million to repair main roads and highways which were damaged due to last
month's heavy rains that were experienced in many parts of the country.
According to complaints received by the RDA, at least 60 per cent of
the road network and highways in the country needs urgent repairs
following the recent rains and floods. Highways Minister T. B. Ekanayaka
told the Sunday Observer that prompt action has already been taken to
send materials and equipment to areas where heavy damage was reported
and road repair work has commenced.
He said after the roads are repaired, steps will be taken to
reconstruct damaged bridges and culverts.
Meanwhile, RDA Project Engineer J. Sirinivasa said all provincial
engineers in the country were directed to commence repairs as early as
possible.
He said action will also be taken to do a full repair on the Colombo-Horana
main road which had been damaged even before the recent rains began.
