Tigers neutralised in peninsula
The
leader of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) Veerasingham
Anandasangaree who is now in Jaffna commended the functions of the
Security Forces in the peninsula and said that the northern diaspora has
expressed their confidence in them.
The TULF chief is currently in Jaffna after four years to look into
his party’s activities and to evaluate the situation there. Commenting
on his observations in Jaffna, he told the Sunday Observer that as the
chief of a leading Tamil political party it was highly satisfying to see
that the LTTE was very much neutralised in the peninsula.”There is no
‘hanky-panky’ any more from the outfit in the north. Wherever I went the
people were very happy over the rapport the Security Forces maintained
with them. Civilians from all walks of life who met me at my office in
Jaffna have also expressed confidence in the Armed Forces.
“Soon after I landed in Jaffna I had an extensive discussion with the
Jaffna Commander Major General G. A. Chandrasri and he briefed me on the
present situation in the North.
It is a great pity to hear that the LTTE which is now desperate has
no respect for temples and is trying to use them even as their hideout.
The timely intervention by the Security Forces had averted a major plot
planned by the LTTE recently at a temple premises in Jaffna.
A large haul of lethal weapons was found hidden in a covered chariot
shed.
If the plot had succeeded there would have been a catastrophe in the
surrounding areas of that particular temple,” Anandasangaree said.
The northerners who believe in a durable solution to the national
crisis said that the Government should expedite a political settlement
while the military operations are being carried out against the LTTE.
He also said that the prices of food items, fuel and other essentials
were stable. However, measures should to be taken to improve the fishing
sector in the region.
“A detailed report on my visit to Jaffna will be presented to
President Mahinda Rajapaksa on my return to Colombo,” the TULF chief
said. |
